HOP STOP European GASTROPUB
PROJECT TYPE: Restaurant
LOCATION: Chicago, IL
DESIGN PARTNER: Amanda Klein
PROJECT GOALS: Create a 250 person European gastropub-style restaurant with a separate retail space that emphasizes a casual, artisanal, communal feel.
DESIGN STATEMENT: By using an eclectic style that mixes both traditional and modern elements, we acknowledge the regional variations of this project’s European inspiration. Contrasts between warm and cool colors, linear and organic lines introduce interest and whimsy into this design. The seating options range from booths, tables, and banquettes to a wheelchair accessible bar, community tables, and a lounge area. A custom lighting lattice over the communal area echoes the concept of connections, both between people and spaces. The raised dining area also houses a circular fireplace that provides light, warmth, and a more welcoming, almost residential, ambiance. A partially open kitchen proudly displays Hop Stop’s heirloom oven and further emphasizes the ties between food preparation and the dining experience. This same heirloom oven produces the baked goods sold in Hop Stop’s attached retail space. There diners can bring home some of the same high quality, artisanal delights they enjoyed in the restaurant. This down-to-earth, welcoming restaurant is sure to be a neighborhood fixture for many years to come.
