KLISE HOTEL SUITE
PROJECT TYPE: Hospitality
LOCATION: Pittsburgh, PA
PROJECT GOALS: Create an environmentally responsible extended stay hotel suite using China’s Ming Dynasty as the design inspiration.
DESIGN STATEMENT: You might expect a design using elements from China's Ming Dynasty to feel too historic to be relevant to today’s style of living. This extended stay hotel suite, however, proves that a Ming inspired design can become a fusion of ancient and modern. With both clean lines and ornamented pieces, this historical style is not out of place among modern amenities like microwaves, televisions, and refrigerators. The geometric motifs used throughout the space reaffirm the Ming ideals of balance and repetition. The color palette is composed of a soothing gray toned neutral, a blue that mimics the intricate designs on Ming vases, and a shade of red traditionally associated with luck and happiness in China. By using recycled, rapidly renewable, and regional materials throughout the space as well as energy saving appliances and water saving plumbing fixtures, this hotel suite is both beautiful and sustainable. The combined kitchen and dining area features modern amenities such as stainless steel appliances, wood cabinetry, and seating for up to six at the dining table. The living room features Ming inspired furnishings and an accent wall in a rich, vibrant red. The same red is featured as an accent wall in the bedroom, which also has a small private balcony. Again blending modern and Ming, the bathroom features water saving fixtures and a custom Ming inspired storage cabinet. No matter how long their stay, this unique suite is sure to support all the guest’s needs.
